November was a good month for the personal blogs category, skyrocketing the second-highest amount of unique visitors (UVs) in two years. But this sharp jump in traffic wasn’t due to a sudden interest in personal blogs, it was due to a single site (with the slight help from a few others).

If you are a hockey fan, you are used to the ups and downs that the sport can put you through—both by your favorite team and the league itself. This year seems to be the start of a very good for hockey. This is assumed by the uncharacteristic multi-month rise in traffic when traffic numbbers are normally flat. In the past, the category didn’t see a lift until January, when many of the casual fans may begin to watch after their favorite football team didn’t make or lost in the playoffs.

Sunday Series: Boeing Helps Travel Category Get Going

October was a great month for the “Corporate Travel” category. In fact, it was the best month that the category has had in the past two years. After a record 25% month-over-month (MoM) increase, the category saw a little over three million unique visitors (UVs). This is one of the first times that the category made it to our list of fast movers and is quite impressive for the relatively small category. But what exactly helped the category perform so well?

Sunday Series: Fashion & Style Among October’s Fast Movers

For this week’s Sunday Series, we have a category that hasn’t made the fast movers list for some time now, the “Fashion and Style” category. As a whole the category saw a 15.6% month-over-month (MoM) increase in unique visitors (UVs). This brought the total category UVs up to 15.9 million for the month of October – the highest that it has been in over a year.

If you were following current events during the month of October then you are probably aware of one of the top stories – the government shutdown and the launch of healthcare.gov, the acting portal of the Affordable Care Act. Knowing this, it’s not surprising that the “Insurance & Physicians” category made our list of fast moving categories.

As the football season moves along and your home team playoff hopes begin to crash and burn or rise at a worrisome pace (I’m an Eagles fan, a city where hope is poisonous and it is foolish to be too optimistic), many of us have turned to our fantasy football teams for solace. The category as a whole is doing the best it has in at least two years. After a 34% month-over-month (MoM) increase in unique visitors (UVs), the category is now seeing over 25 million UVs.

Sunday Series: Science Sites Have Some Positive Chemistry

Apparently September is the month for science. The category, one that has been on the slight decline as of late, made it to our fast movers for September after a 14.9% month-over-month (MoM) increase in unique visitors (UVs) – bringing their count to a little over 16 million for the month.

Sunday Series: Academic Resources See Boost With School Commencement

Now that September’s data is live, our list of fast moving categories is full of academic related sites. Everything from academic-related textbook publishers to citation and formatting related sites have seen double-digit growth. One of the most interesting categories is the “Academic Associations & Resources” category which saw a 40% month-over-month (MoM) lift to 23.2 million unique visitors (UVs).

It could mean that people are relying more and more on the internet to find a job or it could mean that more and more people are looking for a job. Either way, the category is up 8.9% month-over-month (MoM)

Sunday Series: Textbook Sales Helping to Save Book Category

This summer has been rough to the book industry. After a two-year low in June and a slight recovery during July, the start of the school year is finally getting the category back to it’s normal levels. Although the 15% month over month (MoM) increase in traffic seems high, it still lower than last year’s 23% July to August MoM increase.
