If you are a tennis fan then you will find no surprise in this week’s Sunday Series. Blowing all of the fast-moving categories out of the water, the amount of unique visitors (UVs) to sites in the tennis category increased by 84.7% from May to June. With both Roland Garros and Wimbledon taking place during the month of June and the US open taking place in the near future, it would’ve been surprising if the Tennis Category didn’t serve up an ace.
With Rolland Garros taking place until June 9th, it is likely that tournament carried the majority of the traffic gains for the beginning of the month. However, this quickly shifted with Wimbledon beginning June 24th and the US Open beginning in the near future. This is supported by the fact that out of all of the sites in the tennis category, Wimbledon.com saw the largest increase with an almost 4000% jump to 566,000 UVs. This was most likely due to Andy Murray, who kept even casual tennis fans on the edge of their seat by becoming the first British man to win Wimbledon in 77 years.
It will be interesting to see how the Tennis category does in July. Will the increased engagement due to Wimbledon carry over to the US Open? Or will things slow down and mirror previous years? I’m willing to guess that as long as Andy Murray is in the mix the latter will not be the case.
