Traffic to lottery websites increased 35% month-over-month (MOM) in May, reaching a two-year high of 35.1 million Unique Visitors (UVs). Powerball.com leaped from the fourth most visited site in the category in April, to #1 in May, thanks to the second-largest lottery jackpot in history: $590 million dollars. Lotteries are booming: the category of 113 sites Compete tracks saw their traffic increase 52.2% year-over-year (YOY). Does this trend suggest anything about the U.S. economy? According to an ABC News article, “researchers have found that when the economy goes bad, lottery revenues go up.” The more impoverished someone feels, the more likely they are to go out and try to win a large jackpot. However, Compete’s data suggests that it’s not just lower income individuals playing the lotteries. We compiled ten of the fastest growing lottery sites in May, and most often the largest demographic of visitors reported to earning 60-100k per year. This trend occurred on five sites: USAMega.com, MUSL.com, LotteryUniverse.com, Powerball.com and VTlotter.com. 30-60k was the largest income demographic to four sites: TheLotter.com, IdahoLottery.com, WinTrillions.com and RILot.com. Meanwhile, NElottery.com had a tie, with equal percentages of visitors earning 30-60k and 60-100k.
