The Impact of Steve Jobs’ Death on the Web

How did the web react to the untimely death of Steve Jobs?  As every article I seemed to read last week had to do with Jobs or Apple, I was curious to see the impact the news of Apple’s founder had around the web.  I wanted to see how sites were also affected by such an unusual traffic surge, and so I went first to the Keyword Referral tool on

Catching Up on Condiments

Dobroslawa Szulc/Shutterstock France recently banned ketchup in school cafeterias—except, oddly enough, on French fries. First offered in 1876, ketchup today is an American staple condiment and in some circles is considered a vegetable. France is outside of those circles. But ketchup is big business: annual US sales approach $500M. To see who’s best positioned to capture some of that revenue, Compete assessed where consumers researching “ketchup” across major search engines

Buck Up! Why Twenty-Something’s Aren’t Vacuuming

Image from: auremar/Shutterstock I am by no means financially savvy. But come November 21st I will be joining the thousands of other recent graduates and start clipping coupons, putting just 10 dollars in my tank at the gas station and paying back my student loans as my 6 month grace period has ended. Adulthood comes with a lot of responsibility, and while I did just buy my own (and first)

Gamers Today – A View Through Search

If search existed in 1980 when Pac-Man was released, what would gamers or potential gamers have searched for?  Surely Pac-Man, “the most famous arcade game of all time,” according to Wikipedia, would’ve had massive search volume?  Perhaps gamers would have looked to see where they could play, get cheats to help advance levels, find the cheapest retailer to buy t-shirts, or gather information on other games slated for release in

Ridgeline at Risk?

Recently several automotive publications have hinted that Honda may soon discontinue its innovative Ridgeline mid-size pickup.  Dodge just discontinued its like-sized Dakota.  Honda says it has no official plans to do so and just added some minor tweaks to the 2012 model.  Compete prepared a quick look at Ridgeline to inform Honda’s thought processes.  The analysis leverages Compete’s proprietary in-market automotive shopper metrics, which are based on unique consumers (i.e.,

Mobile Wallet: Consumers Are Hesitant, but for Different Reasons

I just searched the phrase “mobile wallet wars” in Google and it returned over 1.8 million results. Mobile wallet is officially buzzing. To be dubbed a war suggests a certain intensity as competitors make a mad rush for territory (a.k.a. consumers). A lot is being talked about in this realm, and action is being taken, too. Google teamed up with a few partners including Citi and MasterCard to introduce Google

August Category Data Show NFL Recovered From Its Lockout Fumble

Image from: Paul Orr/Shutterstock BOSTON, MA–(Marketwire – Oct 11, 2011) – Kantar Media Compete today released August data showing notable growth in its Football category, which drew in 16.6M UVs, a month-over-month (M-O-M) increase of 94.6% percent and a 22.2% percent rise year-over-year (Y-O-Y). This was healthy bounce-back from its lockout-mired lull in July. In fact, football fans showed up in higher numbers online in August 2011 than August 2010.
