Compete March 2011 Category Data Show Consumers Were Fixated on Online Global News

News: World Category Grew 17.5 Percent During a Month of Somber News

BOSTON, MA–(Marketwire) - Compete, a Kantar Media company, has released data for March showing that websites in the News: World category grew significantly. The category attracted 115 million unique visitors (UVs) — growing 17.5 percent month-over-month (M-O-M) and 13.5 percent year-over-year (Y-O-Y). Online news coverage of stories like the Japan earthquake on March 11 and unrest in Libya made March an especially strong month for online news sites.

News.yahoo.com led the category with 51 million UVs — up 25.6 percent for the month and 44.9 percent for the year. The number two site, Msnbc.msn.com, had about half as many UVs as News.yahoo.com (28 million). Despite this significant delta, the runner-up still grew 28.1 percent M-O-M and 30.9 percent Y-O-Y.

Only one site within the top 25 sites in the category decreased for the month, the number 12 site Examiner.com. It dropped 11.4 percent.

The category’s overall number of page views was up 33.5 percent for the month, totaling 4.5 billion in March. In addition, there were nearly one billion visits — an increase of 26.1 percent. Attention was up 17.4 percent and total time spent across the category was 8.1 billion minutes — that’s the equivalent of 5.6 million days or 15,000 years!

Top movers that occupy both the News: World category and the Compete top 250 included Nytimes.com (up 31.7 percent M-O-M), Foxnews.com (up 30.1 percent M-O-M), Cbsnews.com (up 29.8 percent M-O-M) and Cnn.com (up 26.6 percent M-O-M).

Editor’s Note: One factor contributing to the general rise in traffic is the return to a full 31-day month. UVs to many sites, across all categories, dropped in February due in part to the abbreviated 28-day month.
