BOSTON, MA–(Marketwire) – Compete, a Kantar Media company, today released its ranking of the top 50 web sites for February 2011. As expected, the number of site visits declined across Compete’s top 250 sites for February, the shortest month of the year. Among the top 20 sites, which are ranked based on unique visitors (UVs), however, there were three notable exceptions: Facebook.com (+0.26 percent), YouTube.com (+2.20 percent) and Bing.com (+2 percent).
Other upward movers bucking the typical February dip were tax-related sites, which continued their healthy UV gains as we get closer to April 15. Irs.gov was up 49.45 percent, Intuit.com was up 13.16 percent and Hrblock.com was up 46.29 percent.
Local search continues to grow in popularity. Since February 2010, the following sites have shown impressive year-over-year growth: Yellowpages.com (+3.08 percent), Superpages.com (+85.23 percent), Local.com (+13.29 percent), Whitepages.com (+10.13 percent) and Yelp.com (+61.55 percent).
Finally, as Facebook celebrates its rise toward the top, traffic to Myspace.com, once considered a formidable rival, continues to plummet — down 14.13 percent for the month and 50.04 percent since February 2010.
