Faceobook.com and Bing.com Finish 2010 on a High Note
BOSTON, MA–(Marketwire) – Compete, a Kantar Media company, today released its ranking of the top 50 web sites for December 2010. The gap continues to narrow between number two ranked site Yahoo.com and number three, Facebook.com, with fewer than 2.9M UVs separating the two. Comparing the year-over-year (Y-O-Y) growth for the two sites — -1.48 percent for Yahoo and +13.97 percent for Facebook — how much longer will Yahoo manage to hold the superior position over the social networking site?
In other movement within the top ten sites, Bing.com leapfrogged Wikipedia.org to gain the sixth spot, and it closed the year with a 105.36 percent increase in UVs, by far the largest yearly growth among the top 50 sites.
Two other Microsoft-owned domains also posted growth for both the month and year — Live.com (3.12 percent M-O-M, 2.45 percent Y-O-Y) and Msn.com (3.36 percent M-O-M, 5.69 percent Y-O-Y).
Other notable points from the December data include:
- Notable growth for Apple.com, which shot up five spots in the rankings. Apple enjoyed a 29.7 percent lift in traffic for the month and was up 37.63 percent from December 2009 — a month before Apple even announced the launch of the iPad.
- Expected increases in UVs to other top shopping and retail-related sites including Amazon.com (+12.68 percent), Macys.com (+10.96 percent) and Sears.com (+7.02 percent).
- A continued downward trend for Craigslist.org (down 1.5 percent), Myspace.com (down 9.25 percent) and Mapquest.com (down 2.06 percent), all of which ended 2010 with double-digit declines in UVs for the year.
