Monitoring the Social Media Hype

Making sense of all your social media traffic can be a daunting task. Luckily, there are some great tools out there that can help. For a business/brand owner interested in finding out what is being said about them or their brand, we can count how many places they would have to visit: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yelp, etc. the list goes on and on. There are free services out there that can help bring it all together and present you with one place to go to see all the social media activity about you or your brand.  I am going to highlight the one that I know best: NutshellMail, but there are other services out there too, which I’ll mention later.

NutshellMail is a fabulous and free tool that you can sign up for that will send you an email digest summarizing your feeds from the above mentioned social networks (and a few more actually). That’s right – they send you an email digest to your inbox so you don’t have to visit or log in to them individually. What if you see something that you want to respond to? No problem, you can click on the email digest and it will allow you to log in and access that particular social network. Couldn’t be easier. And you can use this not just for businesses and brands but for yourself too. I signed up for the service and quickly found that I had stopped logging into Facebook directly because I was getting all the info I needed in my inbox. Best of all NutshellMail is free! I save so much time and it’s free – can’t beat the ROI of signing up. There are a few other similar types of services out there to monitor your social networking activity: Postling and Sendible are some examples.

Clearly these tools are becoming more popular over time. The spike in May of 2010 was a result of NutshellMail being acquired by email marketing giant, Constant Contact.  But as marketers big and small get more comfortable with the idea of having to use social media as a necessary channel, the use of these tools will only increase by leaps and bounds. No surprise the referring and destination traffic are all the top social networking sites.

NutshellMail is one of likely many examples of tools that will try to provide this information and personally I love it. It changed how I interact with my social networks and these types of social media monitoring tools can do the same for you or your business.
