Starbucks Reigns Supreme

What type of coffee do you prefer – Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts? Every time I ask the question, there seems to be an equal amount of die hards on either side. There was a time when I only cherished Dunkin’s brew, however those days are long gone. Ever since converting from cream, sugar, and the occasional flavor to straight up hot, black java, I have adapted to be able to drink any kind of black coffee. I know… I’m freak of nature.

The recent news about Starbucks offering fine beer and wine in one Seattle location after 4PM each day spread like wild fire. So, I figured there would be no better time to see how the news has impacted the online performance of Starbucks.com vs. Dunkindonuts.com.

When looking at traffic to both of the coffee giants I was surprised to see that Starbucks has maintained a healthy lead in unique visitors over Dunkin’ Donuts forever. When looking the attention paid to each site by the US Internet Browsing Population each day we see that over the last couple of months Starbucks has been killing it!

After checking out Starbucks’ news page, it looks like the expansion of their VIA instant brew coffee distribution channels and enhancements to their smartphone apps is what started the ripple effect in late August/Early September. It is culminated with the news I mentioned earlier.

Really no insights to share here besides obviously Starbucks is doing well with driving online eyeballs and traffic. Dunkin’ Donuts has yet to catch on. What’s stopping you DD?

Starbucks is going out of their way to gain and keep social media users. I don’t recall seeing or hearing anything about dunkin donuts doing it. In this case this is more about branding then direct response. You know people will buy it, you just need to make sure they buy from you then from the other guy :)

Starbucks will always dominate the market, there are more stores, its global, and they’re thinking ahead, Starbucks appeals to more types of people.
