BOSTON, MA–(Marketwire – September 8, 2010) – Compete, a Kantar Media company, today released its ranking of the top museum and gallery sites for July 2010 based on data from the company’s panel of more than two million US-based internet users.
Washington, D.C. is the epicenter for history museums, and summer trips to the nation’s capital give families the perfect chance to learn about the nation’s past. During the month of July, a total of 1,288,058 unique visitors (UVs) visited si.org, giving the site a 26.4 percent increase from the previous month and a 22.56 percent uptick from July 2009. Newseum.org and ushmm.org both experienced a yearly growth (30 percent and 61.8 percent respectively), proving that our national museums are still capable of drawing new generations of visitors.
A Work of Art
With television shows such as Bravo’s Work of Art: The Next Great Artist likely driving renewed interest in art education and appreciation, traffic volume for art museum and gallery sites rose 22.6 percent in July. Boston’s mfa.org, which featured Vincent van Gogh’s masterpiece, The Sower, experienced a spike of 57.9 percent compared to June. Clearly having a new masterwork on display made an impact. Other highly trafficked art museum and gallery sites in July included metmuseum.org (385,299 UVs), moma.org (193,143 UVs) and artic.edu (106,449 UVs).
Many families flock to science museums during the summer, so it wasn’t surprising that the traffic for the category rose 73.8 percent from June. Californiasciencecenter.org was the most heavily-trafficked science museum site in July, with a whopping 160.7 percent increase in UVs, likely due to its “Mummies of the World” exhibition. Msichicago.org and childrensmuseum.org also saw significant month-to-month increases, 66.2 percent and 42.3 percent respectively.
