Girls go wild for Girls Gone Wild

Did that grab your attention? So the story goes; I had a bet with my old roommate that 20% of sales for Girls Gone Wild were female. To which he responded, “No way, it’s less than 1% – girls would never buy that”. Oh, how little does he know….. (Now is a good time to make your guess at what the actual figure is by the way.)

Think for a moment about how many times you’ve fallen asleep on the couch and woke up to that hypnotizing commercial. It doesn’t matter who you are, the subconscious of many people will eventually yield to its marketing barrage and make that call. Now, there may be a number of arguments about who the product is ultimately “geared” to, but you are pretty naive if you think the adult industry forgot about its female audience.

Did you know that in 2006 it was measured that one in three visitors to adult websites were female? I’m sorry that I couldn’t find more current statistics. I tried somewhat diligently but I started going down a trail that would lead me into becoming one of the 23% of employees who visit adult sites during work ;) . Anyway, my point is, I knew he was wrong and here is the proof:

Although visitors don’t equate to sales, I unfortunately don’t have access to GGW offline purchase information. So this is the best proxy I had and I was pleasantly surprised to see 39% of unique visitors to girlsgonewild.com were female. I realize that visitation is a pretty high level metric, so I started digging deeper into the website. What I found was that in Q1 of 2010, 43% of members (people who actually log in) were also female and finally, the moment of truth…….

Wow, 40% of online shoppers turned out be female! So it’s safe to say I won my bet, (mostly due to stupidity) but my guess still wasn’t even that close to the true figure. (How close was yours?) Now, I’m not going to pretend that I have my finger on the pulse of future trends in pornography with respect to women but from what I hear it’s on the up and up. So next time you think about dismissing GGW as some silly product that you can’t believe guys waste money on, keep in mind, 40% of women waste money on this silly product too.
