This Sunday, July 9th, France and Italy, two previous winners with plenty of history between them, will meet in what will surely be an epic battle for the 2006 World Cup. But before we end our discussion on the World Cup, we wanted to know who has won the battle for online fan support, France or Italy?

One would think that the Italian Azzuri, who have a rabid national fan base and are considered one of the best teams in the world would clearly dominate, but actually, our data is showing the French language section at fifaworldcup.yahoo.com is getting nearly 45% more traffic then the Italian section! Is this any indication of who will win on Sunday? Let’s hope for a great match and when you see an Italian player take a dive, remember…they practice!

So it wasn’t the result that United States soccer fans had expected, but the games were exciting and Sam’s Army was out in full force. Crazed fans rooted for the American squad in Germany and in soccer establishments (bars) around the United States…Maybe a US winner in South Africa 2010? Let’s not kid ourselves. A finals appearance in the next 50 years will suffice…

Starting July 4th, the semi finals are set to begin with the best teams fighting it out for the Copa Mundial. With all of the outstanding matches to this point, we can only imagine they will be more competitive and exciting before the finals match on July 9th.

Traffic to the official World Cup website, fifaworldcup.yahoo.com, saw an increase of 227% and 1.4 million people to their site in the opening week of the tournament. Also, traffic at ESPN’s World Cup site, soccernet.espn.go.com, saw an increase of 137% and of 500,000 people visiting in the opening week of the tournament.

In our previous World Cup blog entry, we mentioned that out of the 17 tournaments that have taken place, only 7 countries have won the World Cup. Brazil (5), Italy (3), Germany (3), Argentina (2), Uruguay (2), England (1), and France(1). This cup has seen only 2 teams that are not in this elite soccer group make it to the quarter finals; Ukraine and Portugal. Lets see if an under dog can pull it out this year and give hope to all the American fans around the country.

Farecast

As an air travel consumer, sometimes we feel like there is no competition between the airlines and we never know if we’re getting the best deal possible on a plane ticket. The age old question always arises when you are buying a ticket online- Should I buy now, or do I wait a week to see if prices will go down? If I don’t buy now, will I just watch the prices sky-rocket and kick myself for not buying when they were $50 cheaper? You just never know.

Well, we think that’s going to change now that Farecast.com has come out of their private testing beta mode and become the first airfare prediction website available. As of today, you need to be departing from either Boston or Seattle to enjoy their services, but they will be adding new cities soon enough and we can’t wait. Our data proves that this site is extremely engaging. The average stay lasts 5 minutes and 20 seconds and the average pages viewed per session is 11. Check out farecast.com and let them show you where and when to buy your next plane ticket. Bon Voyage!

Wine

Written by David Kertesz (e-mail) -- June 26th, 2006 | Recommend This | Comments (1) »

If you are like me and have no idea about wine and feel a slight sense of apprehension with the daunting task of walking up and down the aisles at a wine shop in order to pick out a bottle of wine or 4 for your next party, then we might be able to offer some help. As States are changing their laws about shopping for wines online, it is becoming increasingly easier to get that case of rare vintage Pinot delivered from Oregon to Massachusetts. Of course, you still have to be 21 to accept a delivery of wine and it’s a felony if you lie about your age. Just a heads up to my younger brother…

Online wine shopping is increasing in popularity and thousands of sites are providing helpful information, reviews from pros, and have great selections of rare, reasonably priced vintages. Wine.com is a great place to start your hunt and over 35,000 people a week are visiting their site and shopping online. Winesource.com has incorporated a nice community bulletin board into their site where the smart consumer can register and discuss their likes and dislikes about select wine’s and ask for advice from other wine consumers. Winesource.com had 3,000 people visit their site last week and we think more consumers will begin to see the benefit a community of wine lovers can provide to the average wine shopper…Cheers!

Obviously, food is such a big part of our lives and we all wish we could have ma or grandma’s home cooking every night. We all strive to live healthy, but in this on-the-go society that is America, we forget how to eat right and the consequence is being lazy with our food choices and packing on the weight. Trust me, I love the double QT pounder w/cheese and if you could still get it super-sized, I would.

Yet in the past year or so, consumers have really been turned on to the organic food trend and we think it has something to do with the accessibility of the product. Grocery stores like Whole Foods have dedicated themselves to all natural, healthy products that are reasonably priced. Wholefoods.com averages 50,000 visitors a week to their website and as their franchise grows around the world, we bet that traffic to the site will as well. Once on wholefoods.com, you can blog about products, read about food health and just about everything else. The only thing you can’t do is shop. Maybe soon we’ll see them incorporate a delivery service like peapod.com, where 75,000 people a week go to shop and have their food delivered. The organic consumer is an extremely valuable commodity to grocery retailers and all of the major grocery store chains are starting to cater to this lifestyle. Even the stalwart retailer Walmart is rushing to stock more organic foods and organic friendly products on their shelves.

If your excuse for not eating healthy is that you don’t have enough time to cook and shop, we recommend a visit to supersuppers.com. Supersuppers is a new service that allows the consumer to place an order for a fully cooked, healthy meal that can either be delivered or picked up at a later time. These aren’t your Friday night TV dinners, these are gourmet, fresh meals cooked and then immediately frozen to be used at a later time. But if you do have the time, you can stop into one of their stores and actually prepare the food yourself. You can actually plan a cooking party and have all your friends at the store and make meals together. Sounds fun. We’ll bring the wine and beer sit on the sideline and sample off everyone’s plate. 11,000 people visited supersuppers.com in a recent week and we think you should as well.
