TastyBytes Boston – Location-Based Services: Not Just For Mayors
Yesterday, after a brief hiatus, Compete’s TastyBytes series made a comeback in a big way. Held at Towne Stove and Spirits in the heart of Boston, we had an engaging crew of panelists and an awesome group of about 50 attendees from the marketing industry, agencies, and brands to discuss the location-based services space, how it’s developing, and what it means to consumers and marketers.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the event series, TastyBytes luncheons were created by Compete as a fun, informal way to bring people together for networking and sharing new ideas about how the web, the marketing industry, and current technologies are evolving.
We had an awesome panel of LBS experts fresh off the annual SXSW Interactive Conference in Austin including:
- Mike Schneider, A&G @schneidermike
- Aaron Strout, WCG @aaronstrout
- Gary Leopold, ISM @garytravels
- Ajit Verghese, GoodEatsFor.Me @averghese
- Nataly Kogan, WHERE @natalykogan
Mike Schneider and Aaron Strout, co-authors of the soon-to-be released book, Location Based Marketing for Dummies, moderated the panel and led the group in an interesting conversation about how the LBS industry emerged, how gaming can play an even bigger role in LBS, how marketers can leverage the data generated by millions of LBS users every day, and what the future holds for the space.
They discussed some brands that do LBS really well (Disney, Starbucks, The History Channel, etc.) and how we can use similar strategies to market effectively with LBS. We also learned that if Mike Schneider could be the mayor of any place, it would be Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Overall, the event was a lot of fun and very informative, even though it seems like we only scratched the surface of the ever-growing LBS space. We hope everyone got to take away some useful knowledge about location-based marketing, and hopefully we’ll see you at the next TastyBytes event when we head to New York, New York! Until then, check out some of the pictures from yesterday’s event at our Flickr account.
