Wasting Time With Websites

Everyone loves wasting time on the internet, and the internet loves giving you websites to waste your time on. Everyday people all over the world go online and spend countless hours clicking through mindless websites to entertain themselves or just pass the time. I know from personal experience, there’s been a few times that I have been sitting on a train ride, couldn’t sleep, didn’t have much reading material or other things to do, but of course I had my blackberry. Before I knew it, an hour had quickly past as I clicked through fmylife.com
But fmylife.com does not stand alone, there are multiple other websites offering similar, mindless entertainment. Two other popular ones that are people’s favorites online time consumers are stumbleupon.com and textsfromlastnight.com. Although these three sites offer a similar service to online consumers, stumbleupon is slightly different. It is not just funny stories or texts, instead it stumbles to online sites that are interesting specifically to you, and there is much more variety as to what you are seeing as you click through. Stumbleupon with its targeted content and eclectic amounts of information, and interesting things you’d never think to look at before it easily maintains a greater amount of monthly unique visitors than the other two sites.

One other interesting piece of data that we could find through our Compete data was the average stay of users for each website. On fmylife.com the average stay in August was 7 minutes and 23 seconds. On textsfromlastnight.com the average stay in August was 5 minutes and 50 seconds. Finally, for Stumbleupon.com the average stay in August was 3 minutes and 33 seconds. Although it’s difficult to know why the average stay of the website with the most unique visitors is the lowest, in my opinion it is because since Stumbleupon shows you different websites with content that is targeted to you. This makes it easy to get distracted with this new content and end up on a different website quickly.
Why do you think Stumpleupon can’t maintain their viewers on their website and which of these websites gets to waste your time this week?

Someday is not a day of the week.
Everyone procrastinates. Some just do it more often than others. And with the advent of the Internet, it’s become harder and harder not to waste time. Being a hardcore procrastinator, I’ve created this lens (while I should be doing actual work) filled with websites and other random things that are great for wasting time.
