Social Networks: Facebook Takes Over Top Spot, Twitter Climbs

With Facebook officially turning five years old recently, combined with the site surging past MySpace in Monthly Unique Visitors, it seems like a good time to take a little deeper look at the social networking giants.
It’s hard to believe that last year around this time we discussing the effects of bad PR for Facebook and if the site had ‘jumped the shark,’ but those arguments now seem to more appropriately apply to other properties.
A year ago, we ranked the top 25 social networking sites by monthly visits, and I was curious to see how the positions would change if we re-ranked those same sites with the most recent figures.

Some key metrics in the health of a social network revolve around the activity of the user base – visits per unique visitor and time on site. While Facebook has excelled in both areas, MySpace has remained flat or fallen off, with new hot property Twitter climbing the ranks.

MySpace is still the clear number two player in the big categories, but its trends in some key areas aren’t quite so dominatingl and, at least in those areas, they could be looking up at more than Facebook soon.

No surprise here - Facebook has evolved much better and always has something new to offer, while MySpace has gotten stale. I don’t get Twitter though, I don’t think people care to read live updates on what percentage of my burger I’ve eaten.
February 9th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
You have a typo for MyYearbook.com. I don’t think they have 33million monthly uniques.
Interesting look at things to see the rocket-ship rize twitter is on as well as the complete implosion at AOL. I worked for AOL for 1.5 years and it’s widely known to be the place where brands go to die. Netscape, Compuserve…the list is lengthy. Good luck Bebo folks. You guys can fight against the Dulles crew as Michael Birch tries to figure out how to spend all of the money he took from Time Warner shareholders.

Twitter stats could be dramatically understated since many heavy users use desktop client and access is through the API. Is there any clarification on this?
February 10th, 2009 at 3:57 am
This is not entirely clear. Do you look only at the US or North American market? Thanks for clarifying.
February 10th, 2009 at 5:24 am
I agree with Bryan about MyYearbook.com. This is showing more unique visitors than pageviews also.
February 10th, 2009 at 9:59 am
So I guess putting in $240 million into Facebook wasn’t a bad investment for Microsoft after all. I’d still like to know more about their futire direction, though. The way they’re doing things now, it’s bound to hit a celing and then taper off when something new comes along, same as myspace has started falling behind now.
February 10th, 2009 at 10:28 am
The myyearbook.com number was a digit off on UVs, it is actually 3,312,898 but this doesn’t change their ranking, as the visits number stays the same.
@Michael: These figures are for the U.S. internet population only.
@Ian: Correct, these figures are for the site and do not include the desktop client or other alternative methods of Twittering.

Twitter and linkedin are of more value for both business and personal needs. Although I like facebook, I would put it third on my list. Not suprised all three continue to move quickly up the hill - all three are innovative where is myspace really does not seem to be lately. It would be great if some day we could understand the business/personal use dynamics here.
February 10th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Interesting to note that both LinkedIn, Tagged and Ning are seeing growth while others are starting to decline. Regardless of where one prioritizes his/her time, businesses should be paying attention to the statistics. The old eyeballs = money equation still works.
And regarding Ning, I would assume that the stats are an aggregate of all of the niche mini-networks that users can create themselves, which is probably more significant than we all realize right now.
February 10th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Why is there no mention of Japanese Mixi. After all this has been around longer than Myspace, Facebook and indeed is the core template that FaceBook is based on.

You might be missing Blogcatalog from your Social Network classification - whilst the numbers you have are a little low compared to direcly measured with Quantcast, they would still fall around 21-22 on the list.
I realise the intention is to show the same sites as last time, but at the same time I remember how many quoted your list as a definitive list of the top 25 social network sites.
There must be a few others that would make the list now as well.

Competing for quantafied numbers - Quantcast vs. Compete.com
Last Monday, Compete.com released the January ‘09 numbers for the top 25 social networks.
I decided to have a closer look at those numbers and compare it with the numbers from another audience measurement company: Quantcast

Watch out Facebook… here comes Twitter!
February 12th, 2009 at 12:22 am
It is amazing how Facebook has grown so fast and now so far ahead of Myspace. It just goes to show how competitve the web is and the opportunities are endless for web sites that only a few years ago had never been heard of to achieve success.
Good for you Facebook, I have a feeling we will see them both continue to compete like Google and Yahoo for 1st and 2nd spots

I have just started using Twitter and I find it to be an awesome tool for getting your word out!
Thanks for this great analysis
February 12th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Facebook has had considerable success in 2008. I think one of their real success factors is that they have innovated quite a lot over the last year. They changed their user interface and have been adding a fair number of new features to their offering. This is really essential given the rapid growth in members they’ve had. As you grow your membership and user base changes. You need to change with them.
But Twitter is the real success story of 2008 with that incredible growth catapulting them to the 3rd most visited social network.
I’ve written a bit more about this (and what Twitter can learn from Facebook’s growth) if anybody’s interested:

There are a couple new ones that werent around last year at this time that would probably fit in the top 25 above. For instance, Socialgo.com has more uniques than some of the ones near the bottom, but didnt exist a year ago.
February 13th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
This is an interesting and worthwhile discussion. The usability of Facebook compared to other social networks has caused it to overcome a lot, not to mention the stories of classmates, family members, and old colleagues reconnecting thus contributing considerably to it’s social traction (word of mouth).
Facebook has steeper growth rate, will be interesting to see if Twitter does catch up. 2009 will be interesting!
February 18th, 2009 at 8:36 pm
Thanks for this analysis!
Do you have similar analysis for apps on these social sites?
I think apps will play major factor in increasing (or decreasing) popularity of any social networking site going ahead.
Although Facebook has tons of apps, linkedin and orkut are on their way to capture more share.

Which Social Networks Are People Talking About Most?
I got curious about this question when reading the comments Mathew Ingram’s recent post on social networks and uptime. Mathew noted the curious case of Twitter, which is the social network “that everyone wants to use” despite it…

this is indeed a great research..

seems facebook has made wild waves in this net world…

Actually, MySpace was launched in 2003, a few months before Mixi, which was launched in 2004. And I don’t think Facebook is, or has ever been, based on Mixi. Facebook and Mixi are quite different.

“THE DARK SIDE OF FACEBOOK, AKA, “DISGRACEBOOK,” OR FACEBOOKS COMPLETE LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE”
The unaired dark side of Facebook, or should I call it “Disgracebook” because of the extremely poor disgraceful way Facebook treats its members. The reason I say the unaired dark side of Facebook is I have yet to see anything announced on the prime time major news outlets about the disgraceful practices Facebook uses on its members. The Internet is bursting at its seems with unhappy disabled Facebook members who have posted thousands of complaints everywhere it is possible to post complaints about Facebooks complete lack of customer service and mean spirited disregard for concerns, questions and feedback from members and former members.
If anyone thinks Facebook is “listening” to its members or advertisers or anyone wanting to communicate with them, they simply DO NOT know what they are talking about! Facebook ruthlessly, rigorously, relentlessly, and remorselessly walks all over its members with hob nailed boot polices of culling members from membership for unspecified unknown reasons and then accuses the permanently disabled unacceptable members as “possibly” being guilty of spamming or “possibly” being guilty of harassing other members because of asking too many members to be friends at an unspecified rate. Facebook goes on to permanently disable unacceptable members accounts that have too many friends, belongs to too many groups, pokes too many unknown times, sends too many email messages and on and on and on. The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, says that Facebook members seem to take a “personal ownership” of their Facebook accounts. Well, golly gee Mark, Facebook is supposedly a SOCIAL Internet program that people join to meet and make new friends. Making new friends, at least to me, is personal and publishing real photographs and genuine personal information on Facebook seems personal to me. Maybe you should say in your rules and regulations that Facebook wants members to be real and genuine but do not join Facebook for personal reasons and do not expect to be treated in a true genuine caring manner because Facebook does not care in the least about what you think or how you feel. When Facebook says you are guilty of breaking polices you will be treated with complete lack of respect in an impersonal sterile manner and declared unacceptable and permanently banned from Facebook without recourse.
On Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Fan Page Mark states “I’m trying to make the world a more open place by helping people connect and share.” I am glad Mark says he is “trying etc.” because, in my opinion, he certainly has NOT accomplished his mission. Facebook is one of the most closed undemocratic uncaring unsocial business operations since the formation of the Gestapo. Facebook operates carte blanche without regard of a due process of rights for members Facebook deems unacceptable to be a member of its supposed Internet social network service and therefore, disables their account without warning. Facebook justifies its policy and actions under the euphemism of “protecting members” from “repeated actions that COULD BE CONSTRUED as spam,” and from anything Facebook makes up to be a threat to its security. Although Facebook publishes what it SAYS are its rules and regulations, Facebooks security is a computer program of unpublished nonspecific rules and regulations that are enforced by an automated, autocratic, uncaring broadly defined bureaucratic computer program that members violate without knowing it and then booted out of Facebook. If this is not Gestapo like policy, I guess I do not know what it is because it certainly is un-American to say the least!
Furthermore, in my opinion, Facebook is NOT a Internet “social network service.” When joining Facebook you are, in reality, joining an Internet money making “computer advertising program” that is set up to look like a Internet “social network service” for the public. In essence, the Internet “social network service” is a screen or cover for a “computerized advertising” empire designed with one thing in mind, the bottom line profits for Facebook investors. I am all for investors making a profit and if the investors will wake up they can increase their profits by paying attention to the consumer members of Facebook. As it stands now, the consumer is NOT king on Facebook. Facebook can at any time without having to explain its decision declare any member persona non grata. Is it any wonder Facebook members are treated with total disregard for being feeling thinking real people? I have yet to know of a computer program that is able to feel and or to reason. When placing a phone call to Facebook you are treated rudely and crassly informed to use their computerized automated services, which do not reply when used or quickly transferred to an automated answering service to which there is no reply.
Why a business would choose to advertise on “Disgracebook” is beyond my ability to understand sound business practices? I know that I will not purchase any goods or services advertised on “Disgracebook” and I urge anyone mauled by “Disgracebooks” insensitivity to boycott anything advertised by this disgraceful, despicable, sorry company!
If “Disgracebook” is treating its foreign members as poorly as it treats its domestic members “Disgracebook” is not only giving itself a black eye it is giving the United States of America a black eye. Is there anyone out there who cares enough and can communicate with Facebook to help Facebook become a user friendly Internet social network service it claims to be?
I strongly urge anyone interested to please research what I am informing you of because I assure you the situation I have explained is the truth and nothing but the truth so help me God. Until the media and or business community and elected officials takes notice of and makes public “Disgracebooks” dark side inhuman treatment of people Mark Zuckerberg and his staff and money making computer program will continue to execute its falsely accused unacceptable members and fill up trenches behind “Disgracebooks” California headquarters with their discarded accounts.

Hello -
My friends and I are putting together this social website. It’s 3D and all about individualism. After register user can start building his/her own personal room, adding pre-made objects or create own objects through object builder. The room has an mp3 player to listen to music…. There is also a social section where you can find friends, view comics, reviews (in developing). User can share video, photo, documents…
Let’s check it out. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Another Android-capable device comes down the line, but this one is different from anything currently out on the market. ZiiLabs created the StemCell computer to be an open standards development platform, capable of running a Linux distro or Android with equal ease. yeah.. one thing i believe that make facebook really success is their ability to actually meet up the real purpose of social and networking.. to get people together.. it’s not just a profile showoff site like friendster and myspace.. the key word is “communication”.. just like the phone, the internet itself.. the better u can give the service, the better u’ll be.. i can say that facebook, was indeed a new creation.. just like the first time u get handphone.. the feeling of getting connected is there.. congratulation facebook

How can we learn how to twitter, facebook and linkedin and anything else as a company? I am thrilled to be with the kids, but I want to seperate my personal with my business hopes.

From what I observe with about 14 million unemployed a natural course of this group would be to network and join the virtual world of Linkedin and Facebook.
This population has time to explore this media venue and find it is a easy way to stay in touch with past co-wokers, friends, and groups.
Linkedin as a business network allows one to stay connected to thier industry by joining thier groups and posting to conversation in thier area of expertise along with staying current on updates and changes in these feilds.
Myspace seems to target the teen to 20 somethings market and they seem to be switching to Twitter as thier instant social platform.

This was helpful for my lastest blog post, http://bit.ly/13lSH. The rising importance of these social media sites presents a great opportunity for companies and PR agencies to leverage opportunities and generate content.
August 26th, 2009 at 1:46 am
The internet was designed or built premised on the same freedom to express, to write, to communicate to inform and to collaborate. Any external regulation of Social Networks may seek to destroy the same freedom to express which is the essence or bane of the World Wide Web in its entirety and remains its fundamental strength.
Africans all over the world both in Africa and in Diaspora are also now using social networks such as Face book, MySpace, Twitter and tansali ( -dedicated African Social Network) etc to share all manner of information to include Video and Photographic content, to keep in touch, to be kept up to date on politics, entertainment news and gossip.
Recently a campaign to provide constant electricity supply in Nigeria (which seems to have eluded Nigeria since its independence) called Light up Nigeria was started on twitter and lunched on tansali which is a clear example of social networking sites serving the purpose of uniting a community or an ethnic group etc irrespective of geographic physical location in pursuing an objective.
As the cost of bandwidth becomes cheaper and internet access more readily available across Africa as a whole, Social Networks especially ones such as tansali focused on providing specific content and services for specific groups will become even more popular and in demand.
August 26th, 2009 at 2:21 am
Facebook appeals to people looking to reconnect with old friends and family members or find new friends online and now facebook also converts as a great business hub for developers.
The usefulness of Twitter is not readily as obvious to some people as Facebook; although it may be more addictive once you get the hang of Tweeting.
I think Facebook having maximum numbers then twitter to become the next Google or will they fade into the rear view mirror of technological and social evolution.

I used to spend a lot of time on my for Unconditional freedom myspace page up until 2007, but got tired of it. I haven’t really caught on with Facebook and Twitter yet (still wondering whether it’s worth it), and I looking into the possibility of creating my own social networking site (and who knows maybe it will be ranked on your list some day).

Twitter has now grown exponentially. Regardless, people still prefer Facebook because of the pictures that you can publish.

Grate list of top social networking websites cheers.
Imagine if they all paid there members a share of the advertising revenue they get. This must be: ‘BILLIONS OF DOLLARS’. That would be great.
There is only one social networking website I know that does this. It’s also unsupprisingly growing at a rate of knots. With close to 1,000,000 members already.

I am still wondering whether my backlinks from Twitter are more valuable than those from Facebook. But it’s definitely impressive to see Twitter’s growth rate in such a relatively short time.
