My team played (USC) and I caught the tail end of the Utah game. I “boycotted” all commercials and I could care less about and did not watch any of the other games. Florida/Oklahoma was over before it started and was a lame matchup. Had there been a playoff, I probably would have watched every game to see who might play my team. We now have pointless bowls being hosted in *Canada* and viewership for these lesser bowls has to be declining as they get more obtuse. The real money is in TV ads and just imagine what viewership would be like if we had a playoff system where every game matters…

What is interesting about these polls is Yahoo! is the champion of anti-BCS articles and pro-playoff ones – ESPN is losing its edge and so is the system they support.

A controversy over rules might be good for stimulating conversation and interest before the games, but the actual viewership depends on who’s playing. If your favorite team gets kicked out due to flaky rules, you’re hardly likely to continue watching.

Surely the increase in internet usage over the past four years has played some role. It seems highly unlikely that, despite the age of the BCS system, the past few years have seen a 20% increase in college football interest.

Account for the increase in internet usage since 2005 (around 40%), and you’ll find that the relative interest in the BCS has actually gone DOWN since then.
