"Judging by the amount of ads for hip, cool prepaid phones, trendy clothing and “hot shoes,” I’d say companies see Facebook and other social networking sites as the perfect place to target that “young adult” audience. With people of every demographic beginning to use these sites, is this really a smart way to spend their ad budgets?"

I'm pretty sure that you are a member of the young adult audience being targeted so that's what you see. Everyone sees different ads on facebook, because all the ads are already segmented based on the demographics you provide. Try logging in with your Dad's info and you'll notice that the advertising completely changes.

I don't think it has anything to do with which group is more creative. Sure, MySpace allows pretty much infinite customization possibilities, but the vast majority of user profiles are attrocious. Furthermore, probably close to 100% of the users who choose to pimp, tweak, or trick out their profile do it via one of the personalization sites mentioned, and don't do any designing or customizing on their own. To actually hack into MySpace code and customize it via html and css calls is actually quite tricky, and kind of a waste of time. I think the Facebook platform outperforms MySpace across pretty much every category. I only find MySpace useful for music.

You'll notice all the "personalization" websites are about Myspace, not Facebook. Myspace users are a lot more creative. Facebook is simply restrictive, but what do you expect from Harvard?
