I'm all for helping the earth. The audio environment is also somewhat neglected, with songs becoming increasingly predictable, lacking in a distinct melody line, and lacking in terms of meaningful lyrics. I'm determined to do my part to enhance the auditory world. I've started the New Year with this original song. This one's for all the earth lovers and music lovers out there.

Interesting thoughts, but as Miranda said, this needs closer analysis. It is no surprise that climatecrisis.net peaked and then dipped - after all it just reflected the popularity of the film. I am also not at all convinced by the validity of lime.com as a meter for green issues : it simply reflects the interest that people have in themselves, and if being greener adds to that feeling of well-being, then so much the better. Lime can only help itself by being seen to be green.

But there is more to it that just the raw statistics. My main site ("The Earth Blog") is not a conventional blog, but a series of long pieces, which need a bit of commitment to get through (although I try and make the outcome as rewarding as possible). Nevertheless, my own 3rd or 4th level blog had a record 6,000 hits last month, and seems to be going up. Could it be that it is the more committed environmentalist, rather than the casual reader, that is more relevant in reflecting our attitudes? 20 years ago there was just a handful of "Eco Warriors" that scared the pants of some and were sen as deluded by most; now the same types of people are seen as "campaigners" and "speakers" - and there are a lot more of them!

I am heartened by the mainstream, long-term involvement of organisations like the BBC, in the environmental agenda. We may hold some stall by the figures attached to blogs like Groovy Green and Grist, but the readers are predominantly transient - it's the number of comments that show some thought that is far more relevant. Without committment, the environmental movement is no more than a fad.

this is interesting . But I wanted to point out that your study includes only a few mainstream environmental group websites. It would be more accurate to also look at readership of Grist magazine and things like Treehugger, StopGlobalWarming, and various individuals' blogs. One thing is you might want to look at all the blogs at BlogNetBiz/Environment and see all the green blogs there and their readership. In short, old school green sites like Greenpeace and Sierra are great but they are not necessarily representative of the current state of green website readership!
