Perez Hilton and Britney Spears

Written by Andrew Meagher (contact - e-mail) -- December 21st, 2006 | Recommend This

Bloggers have the unique opportunity to present their views without fear of recriminations thanks to the relative anonymity the medium provides. Some use this to their advantage, and watch their popularity skyrocket as their posts become more and more controversial. But there’s where the twist comes in. The more notoriety a blogger attains, the less anonymity they can retain. So they have a choice — tone down their musings and maintain a private life or embrace the madness of celebrity. Perez Hilton has clearly chosen the latter, and all of the trappings that come with it.

In the past few weeks, the self-styled “Queen of all Media” has gotten tons of press, agreed to a live appearance on MTV’s World-wide, Celeb-studded New Year’s Eve show from Times Square, and been hit with a multi-million dollar lawsuit from a paparazzi agency claiming damages from his unaccredited use of their photos. I guess the Queen has truly arrived.

But the real proof is in the clicks, at least as far as we here at Compete are concerned. Take a look at the last few weeks of visitors to his site:

Note: The image above was inspired by the artwork featured daily on PerezHilton.com, examples of which can be seen here, here, and here.

We’re still trying to come up with a reason for the sudden amazing upsurge in visits to his site during the last week of November. We’re really scratching our heads over this one. What could have caused a sudden quadrupling in the number of people who visit a site devoted to posting unflattering photographs (with scribbled graffiti) of well-known people? Maybe it will always remain a secret.

Wasn’t that right around the time people got real mad at Perez Hilton for “stealing” photos taken by other “freelance photojournalists” and passing them off as original work or using without attribution.

Call me crazy, but I’m guessing there is a high correlation with Perez’s site traffic and Britney’s crotch shots.
