FIFA World Cup 2006

It has been 4 long years for you die hard soccer fans since Brazil won their 5th World Cup in Japan/Korea, and come June 9th, the world’s largest sporting event will kick off (excuse the pun) again. Thirty-two of the world’s best soccer nations will square off in Germany to decide who will take home the world’s most prestigious trophy.

With an estimated 213 countries tuning in (that’s just about all of them), the TV and Web audience will be much bigger than the Olympics’ and the Super Bowl combined — an estimated 28 billion cumulative in-home TV viewers worldwide! That’s the entire world watching.

Traffic to the official World Cup website - fifaworldcup.yahoo.com - was up 30% last week, attracting over 300,000 people (we’re still 2 weeks away from the start of the tourney!). ESPN’s World Cup site soccernet.espn.go.com also witnessed a surge in traffic, with 250,000 people visiting, or a 20% increase.

Did you know that out of the 17 tournaments that have taken place thus far, only 7 countries have won the world cup? Brazil (5), Italy (3), Germany (3), Argentina (2), Uruguay (2), England, and France.
